My Christmas Story By Mary Mullarkey

by admin on September 23, 2010

2003 was my worst Christmas ever. I was 6 months pregnant, cooking on Xmas day for 12 people.
I’d been up the night before, prepping the veg/potatoes plus final wrapping of pressies. I was at the last hurdle of finishing cooking, when next thing I must of slipped on a spillage in the kitchen and falling onto my stomach and smashing my head open.
It wasn’t a bit gash, something I could deal with. But against advice, as
I didn’t want to spoil my other 2 girls Christmas, I soldiered on, like us mums do.

Around 6-7 days later, I was taken into hospital, as I’d gone into early labour. It was the most traumatic thing ever! Alarms going off, no heart beat for my baby, either. As I was rushed through to the emergency room, crying and blaming myself, because as far as  was concerned, my baby had died.
I then remember waking up, seeing my husband over me crying, thinking the worst, but cried tears of joy, when he told me we had a very healthy 4lb 6oz little girl.
Considering how early she was, that was  a great weight. I then collapsed back asleep due to low blood pressure.

We found out after, that I’d had a placenta abruption, and that’s why
little Emma came early, and I often wondered if I had gone to hospital on
Christmas Day, could I have prevented any of this happening? Or
maybe not falling over would have been a better bet!!
Emma was in intensive care for 12 days, and I can honestly say, the worst part for me, was not being able to hold her for 4 days, and coming home empty handed.

The worst christmas ever for me and my family.
xx
