After years of keeping us giggling, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders are calling it a day as far as TV sketch shows go. The credit crunch seems to be hitting the comedy stars: in the Times, Saunders commented, “You can’t do the shows we used to. We came through at a time when the BBC did everything in-house, so everything was available: costumes, wigs, special effects. Now everything is put out to tender, so everything costs an amazing amount.” You may find this a bit of a Christmas gift. The stars’ recent shows have not been as funny as the original ones: we can now just look forward to Boxing Day repeats of the oldies and goodies.
