If you’re a fan of nineties hit sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, you’ll be over the moon to hear that the cast are back for a new two-parter. Red Dwarf: Back to Earth has been commissioned by UKTV digital channel Dave and will air over the Easter weekend. The episode wil see Rimmer, Kryton, Lister and Cat finally return to Earth, a gift for fans who have been wondering what happened next. Over 8 series and 54 episodes Red Dwarf followed the crew, the only survivors on the eponymous mining ship. The final episode, which went out in 1999, ends with Red Dwarf being eaten away by a mystery virus. The crew have all abandoned ship, save for Rimmer who is left stranded alone to face Death (who he has just kicked in the groin). A decade wil have elapsed in the show’s time too, with the new episode beginning with a “shock development” putting the crew back on Earth.
The original cast of Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn will return, together with series co-creator Doug Naylor as writer and director. Since the series ended, Craig Charles has been in Coronation Street, Chris Barrie has had a varied career from Discovery Channel docs to The Brittas Empire, Danny John-Jules’ most prominent recent appearance is in CBBC series MI High, and Robert Llewellyn has presented Scrapheap Challenge.
