I find gift ideas for my boyfriend tricky sometimes and with his birthday being so close after Christmas it’s even worse as all ideas have been exhausted! Many people I’ve spoken to are in the same boat no matter how far apart these occasions are. I’ve found the key is to listen, so if he mentions he likes something I try to keep a mental (and later physical) note of the theme or specific item he has mentioned. If you write down ideas as he mentions them or as they come to you, you will always be armed with a good variety of gift ideas for him!
In my experience, most men like practical gifts. They’re just not programmed the same way as women who tend to lean towards luxury, pampering, pretty sorts of goodies. I’ve learnt that men appreciate you buying them something useful and they love it because it saves them having to buy it for themselves. Easy peasy but a bit boring eventually, unless you can add a clever or wacky little twist to it. An example of this might be if your other half wants a desk tidy. Instead of getting a bog standard one, one that looks like a pen lid but is still functional!
Maybe buy a nice frame and make more of a gift out of it by already having a nice photo in when you give it to him. Lots of people I know like to receive photo frames, but a year down the line, there’s still nothing in it. This way, you’ve saved someone the time and effort of hunting down a picture and possibly having to resize it. It doesn’t sound like much effort but sometimes it just never gets done!
If you’re running a bit low on cash, why not cook something for you both (or your partner’s favourite dish) that takes a bit more effort but doesn’t cost the earth? Make more of an effort to lay the table (rather than eat off your laps in front of the television), light some candles and it’ll seem like you have gone to more expense and trouble than you actually have. After all, the way to a man’s heart is generally through his stomach. I’m not a bloke and that’s the way to mine!
A trip away somewhere is always a bit special if you can afford it. A bit of time to yourselves and a change of scenery can be a nice treat and you can enjoy it too! Whether it’s a case of staying in the country or going abroad, it’ll be a lovely surprise and a welcome break for you both.
Looking for something that will last a bit longer? Some people get their partner a pet! From guinea pigs to dogs, this will be a great and rewarding present. Not to mention one of the most expensive things you will probably buy as a gift.
