A three hour epic romance is the latest film from Baz Luhrman. “Australia” is seen as the great hope to revive the country’s film industry and attract the gift of foreign investment. A cross between “Out Of Africa” and “Gone With The Wind,” the adventure stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. It is reported by Reuters to have cost Rupert Murdoch’s 20th Century Fox about US$130 million (88.2 million pounds). Set in World War Two, Kidman is an English aristocrat who travels to Australia. The film involves a journey driving cattle across the country’s rugged countryside. It is being promoted by Tourism Australia in a A$50 million campaign, hoping to rival the effect of Crocodile Dundee on visitor figures. Great news for the backers is that Oprah Winfrey described it as “the best movie I’ve seen in a long, long, long, long time.”
