Goodbye To Oliver Postgate

by Antonia on December 28, 2008

It is goodbye to Oliver Postgate, creator of classic shows including Bagpuss and the Clangers. The soft voiced animator died aged 83. His shows were a gift to children throughout the fifties, sixties and seventies and some are still shown today.

Pingwings, Pogles’ Wood, Noggin the Nog and Ivor the Engine were all made by Smallfilms, the company run by Postgate and Peter Firmin. The business was started in a disused cowshed. With an art school background, Firmin started by creating the backgrounds and models while Postgate wrote and animated the stories.  Bagpuss was voted the most popular children’s television programme of all time in a poll in 1999.
