South African singer Miriam Makeba has died aged 76 in Italy. In an interview with Talk Radio 702 her publicist said Makeba died of a heart attack shortly after performing at an event near the town of Caserta.The veteran singer, known as “Mama Africa,” was taken to a clinic after falling ill after a performance at an anti-racism and anti-organized crime concert. Once of the first black South African singers to become internationally famous, Makeba was born on March 4, 1932, in a shantytown outside Johannesburg.
