Few careers advisers at Oxford will have ‘TV quiz host’ on their list of possible careers, but this is where 22-year Oxford maths graduate Rachel Riley is headed. Together with former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling, Riley will be replacing the team of Carol Vorderman and Des O’Connor at the end of December. Richard Whiteley and Vorderman teamed up to present the show from 1982 until Whiteley’s death in 2005.
There was a rigorous process to sift more than 1,000 applicants for Vorderman’s job. Gifted mathematicians showcased their maths skills at a screen test in Leeds. Riley says, “This is the best graduate job in the world. There’s only one cool maths job around and I was lucky enough to get it so I’m absolutely thrilled.” Co-host Stelling is best known for presenting Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports. He has been three times Sports Broadcaster of the Year.
