Papal Forgiveness For Lennon

by Antonia on December 31, 2008

More than 40 years after John Lennon claimed the Beatles were more famous than Jesus, the late Beatle has finally been given the gift of forgiveness. The news, reported by Reuters, is that Vatican daily newspaper Osservatore Romano has issued forgiveness rather than the Pope himself. The newspaper says, “The remark by John Lennon, which triggered deep indignation mainly in the United States, after many years sounds only like a ‘boast’ by a young working-class Englishman faced with unexpected success, after growing up in the legend of Elvis and rock and roll.” The comment was made in an article to mark the 40th anniversary of the Beatles’ “The White Album”. Lennon’s original remark angered Christians, and lead to albums being burnt in pyres.
