Have you noticed a lack of big name bands planning to release a Christmas single this year? Bookmaker William Hill believes that the X-Factor is to blame. Spokesman Rupert Adams says, “The biggest artist in the world couldn’t beat ‘The X Factor. The stars steer clear, as it would be slightly embarrassing to be beaten by a performer that, in their view, is not a serious artist.”
Since the X Factor started it has dominated Christmas charts with number ones every time:
- 2007 Leon Jackson “When You Believe”
- 2006 Leona Lewis “A Moment Like This”
- 2005 Shayne Ward “That’s My Goal”
But is the number one slot a gift for whichever newbie appeals to the nation and the judges? And does it really matter? If you look at previous Christmas number ones it has not been a time for great musical endeavour, but for a great heap of cheese! Particular low points were Bob the Builder’s “Can We Fix It?” in 2000, and Mr Blobby’s self named song in 1993.
