I’ve wrote before about the history of Something Borrowed and Something Blue. This time I want to give some tips on how to buy something blue and what the bride can choose to wear  or what maybe friends would like to give her on her hen night or wedding morning.

Just because the tradition is an old one doesn’t mean that the actual something blue has to be old fashioned and staid. Gone are the days when a bride would make do with a naff stocking garter.

Firstly the bride might want to wear a piece of jewellery on the big day that can count as borrowed and blue. If the blue is a new purchase for on the day then I would suggest that you always buy something that you can wear afterwards. Not only is this financial commen sense in these austere times and you get a two for one  but its also means that your memories can be worn with you everyday afterwards.

There’s nothing like a diamond with gorgeous blue sapphires but bringing myself back down to earth with a bump and reminding myself just what a wedding costs these days not everyone’s budget can run to this. So look around the web for some earrings as well. There are so many to choose from you will defintely be spolit for choice. A necklace with precious stones in your choice of blue is also a lovely delicate piece to wear.  I love the Lily Charmed You & Me necklacein the boutique. Choose your’s and hubby to be’s initial and accent it with faceted blue topaz stone. Very simple but very chic.

Hairbands and alice bands are very popular and have the vintage touch that is very of the moment. You can choose various designs .. swarovski crystals,  fabric flowers etc;. You can have them hand made to order with a touch of blue in the design.

Underwear is another strong theme when choosing to buy something blue but there are so many classy and chic alternatives to the run of the mill garter that you will be stuck for choice. Practically every high street store will have a something blue pair of knickers to suit all tastes. My personal favourite still has to be our hand made to order silk side tie wedding knickers. 100% powder blue silk and embroidered in contrasting ivory thread with ‘Just Married’ or your new ‘Mrs’ name.  For those who want to keep with tradition you can have a matching lace garter.

Blue wedding shoes is a personal favourite of mine. Again whatever your budget from high street to high end designer there will be a pair that will suit you and your budget. Just don’t get too carried away as designer wedding shoes can easily cost just as much as your gown. Why don’t you track down a pair of clip on earrings that can be your something blue  and add them to a pair of ivory deapartment brand ivory pumps? Designer look with a fraction of the price.

If you really want to keep your something blue purse friendly or you just want to keep it really simple you can always paint your toes a pretty shade of blue when you have your bridal pedicure. Essie do a gorgeous range of nail polishes or you could opt to have a gel finish to your toes from a qualified nail technician which will see you right through your honeymoon, too.

As ever we can offer the traditional with a twist that we do so well. We have a fabulous  collection of wedding charms designed to be tied to your bouquet or arranged in your hair or even attached to your wedding knickers or to the hem of your gown. They are generally quite small but very effective and provide just a hint of Something Blue to give you that nod to tradition that every bride still seems to want to acknowledge.
