Researching buying wedding gifts for my own wedding thankyous, I’ve been interested to find out the different roles that guests adopt to help add to your day in numerous different ways so I can be informed when it comes to picking my own wedding helpers! One of the roles I’ve learnt most about is a flower girl. This role is usually taken by a little niece, cousin or very young sibling between the ages of three and eight. The little girl needs to be young enough to be cute, but aware enough to follow instructions and not be too shy to walk down the aisle by herself with everyone watching.
The Bride and Groom design a basket filled with flower petals with a coordinating fabric lining and chosen scent. The flower girl is then required to walk slowly down the aisle scattering the petals to make a beautiful pathway for the bride to walk down moments later. At some weddings, the flower girl gives out thornless roses to the guests. The petals are also meant to bring good luck to the couple. The only pitfall might be if she’s young enough to begin to wander or get shy at the last minute and start crying. It’s not unusual for young children to want to talk or play at a moments notice so it’s worth having a relative on standby to encourage the little girl or walk along with her. It’s not the end of the world if that happens, but it is nice is everyone can perform thei r role without a hitch!
The flower girl’s dress is traditionally white with a sash that coordinates with the bridesmaids dresses. It’s worth bearing in mind that children grow quickly at this age so they will most likely grow out of the dress if you choose it too early. For older flower girls, it is customary for them to have a dress that is tastefully similar to the bride’s dress or a miniature version of the bridesmaid dresses.
The final tradition to buy your bridesmaids and flower girl a token gift . So what flower girls gifts would you pick? Well, depending on ages that could be jewellery, an accessory, a dolly, a purse or a bag? It’s really up to the bride who will know her friends and family the best. She might even want to get her a personalised item whether it’s a chocolate bar to keep the little flower girl distracted at the reception to a special mug or colouring book with her name on!
