Mothers Day Tradition Set To Continue ( Mother´s Day Gifts)

Whether you´re a mum-to-be or lucky enough to be a mum already, Mothers Day is your time in the spotlight. Hopefully you´re ready for some pampering and appreciation! Mother´s Day has been around for a very long time but I was interested to dig a bit deeper and see how it all started out and learn more about its origins.

In its purest form the tradition is centuries old and has always been a day to honour mothers and motherhood. Nobody is exactly sure how Mothering Sunday came about but many believe that it originated from a Roman Spring festival which celebrated their Mother Goddess. This later developed through the Christian faith where it became customary to visit your ´Mother Church´ at this time. People working as servants and maids were allowed one day off a year to visit their mother and were sometimes permitted to take flowers or eggs as a token gift. Quite often, they were allowed to bake a cake to take home as a gift too. ´Simnel cake´ is a fruit cake with a marzipan topping and 11 balls of marzipan as decoration. The 11 balls represent the 12 apostles (minus Judas after his betrayal). This is the traditional simnel cake that we still bake and eat today and we eat it at Easter-time as a result of fasting for Lent. Mothering Sunday changes year to year, but it is always the fourth Sunday of Lent. Mothering Sunday is our name for this festival, but it is celebrated all over the world under different names, at different times and in different ways.

As trends have changed over the years, the style of gift giving has too. Flowers and edible treats have seemingly always been a part of the celebration in more primitive forms, but newer fashions such as card giving are only a sign of recent times. In the past, the gifts were more functional, but in the modern day the gifts we give are more novelty and luxurious. As well as a gift, give your mum some of your time. Fuss her or just spend some time talking and being together. No amount of money can buy that time and it´s probably going to be your mum´s favourite bit of the day!

Fundamentally, the principal is still the same as it ever was and that is the appreciation of the mother figure in your life whether that is your mother, step-mother, grandmother or friend. This is also something that has changed over time and has led to a whole range of cards and gifts geared towards a shift in family situations which would never have occurred in the past.
